Resume & Cover Letter

What are they and why do you need them?

Resumes

Whether you are applying for a job, internship, or scholarship, or trying to get into college or technical school, having a well

written resume is essential. A resume is typically a 1 page document that summarizes your skills, qualifications, education, working experience, and volunteer or other activities. It is objective, separated into sections, and includes bulleted statements. It is oftentimes the first impression a potential employer or hiring committee gets of a given applicant, and can make or break one’s chances of getting the job, internship, scholarship, etc. This document is ever-evolving and will oftentimes need to be updated and changed, depending on how and what you are using it for.

The process of assembling a resume can be tiresome and frustrating, especially considering the fact that there are hundreds, probably thousands, of templates out there claiming to be “the best.” No matter the format or template you decide to use for your resume, I have found that the best ones have the same qualities:

  1. They are clean and easy to read, visually.
  2. They have been edited for grammatical and spelling errors.
  3. They highlight qualifications, experiences, and skills that are relevant.
  4. They are accurate and true.

Cover Letters

If a resume is a summary document, then a cover letter is an introduction document. There is debate whether one even needs to have a cover letter, however, every hiring manager I have talked to says that applicants who submit a cover letter along with their resume not only stand out, but are more likely to move on to the next phase of hiring. So what is this document? It is a 1 page letter addressed to the person receiving your resume, or “To Whom it May Concern” if you don’t have a direct contact. This letter is written in narrative form and in essence “connects the dots” for the person reading your resume, meaning that it spells out how the information on your resume makes you qualified for the position you are applying for, or scholarship, or internship, etc. Like resumes, all great cover letters have the same qualities:

  1. They are clean and easy to read.
  2. They are personalized for the position, scholarship, program, etc., you are applying for.
  3. They have been edited for grammatical and spelling errors.
  4. They explain how you found out about the position, scholarship, internship, etc., how the information in your resume makes you the best candidate, and your interest.
